DON'T JUDGE ME

Standing at five foot three and weighing in at one hundred and twenty two pounds, Ema could easily be considered petite. She's small, yes, but nothing about her seems anything like it. She has bright orange hair a little past her shoulders that makes her stand out in a crowd. It's generally left down, but Em may sport the occasional ponytail, most often at work to keep it out of her face. Her eyes, which are on the smaller side, are a light brown. She has a sort of a quick pace when she walks in general, but slouches a bit as well. It's not overly noticeable, but anyone who knows her well scolds her to walk straighter.
Ema's closet is a bit edgy. She has various spunky pairs of jeans, ragged tops, and darker dresses. More often than not, she sports her metal nametag from the Pokemon Lab on her shirt. She doesn't care where she is or if she's off duty. Its too much of a hassle for her to continuously introduce herself. She never wears heels, but flats are a must, never sneakers. A bit ironic considering her job, but she owns many pairs.

Anyone who knows Ema on an acquaintance level could summarize her similarly: harsh, calculating, and stuck up. But there's a lot more to her than that. When first meeting her, it's true that she can be upfront, but it's only her front wall. Once you get to know her she's a lot more calm. To those younger than her, there is no possibility to truly break down this wall, though. She doesn't have a filter, either. She'll cuss if she wants to, and she'll tell you exactly what she's thinking. Friends of Ema have to be able to take what she says with a grain of salt but not over-think what she's saying. She can certainly mess with people's heads like that without even trying to.
Deeper down, Ema is a more timid person. She's sure of herself, but not when it comes to other people. Those few that can break down her barrier see a side of her that's very unique. She's never had a boyfriend or girlfriend due to her cold exterior, and doesn't have that many close friends.
To pokemon, Ema is much different, especially for first impressions. She is calm and caring, the traits needed to be the assistant in the Pokemon Lab. Pokemon are drawn to her, albeit a little surprisingly. Ema treats them well nonetheless. People are generally surprised when they see her with pokemon.
WHERE I COME FROM
if.i.had.to.write.an.essay;
As a child, Ema was spoiled and adored since she was an only child. She had both a loving mother and father, as well as her grandmother (from her father's side) living in the house with her. From the age of four, she had always had an infatuation with Pokemon. She would look out her window in Rustboro City and see trainers walking down the street with their new pokemon. It was her mother who had had two pokemon when she was a teenager -- a Surskit and a Lunatone. Her mother was like an idol to Ema. She wanted to get her own Pokemon and travel the region, just like any other little girl or boy. Her parents, though, weren't so fond of the idea, even when they had treated her like she would be a trainer one day. It led to many frustrated arguments between the then nine year old and her parents.
Years passed and the fights eventually subsided. Ema began to realize that she was never going to win. She would have to prove to her parents that she could do it all by herself.
Her dad was going on a business trip to Littleroot Town, and twelve-year-old Ema tagged along. It was only for a day, so her mom stayed at home. When her father went into the building for his meetings and other things, Ema, however, rushed to the little area of tall grass between Littleroot and Oldale City. She wasn't exactly prepared for any wild Pokemon to attack her. But sure enough, the second she stepped foot in there, a Zigzagoon sprang at her. Startled beyond belief, Ema had no idea what to do. She didn't know if the crazy Pokemon would bite her if she didn't get it to calm down. Thankfully, only after a few seconds after the arrival of the Pokemon, the Professor arrived. They captured the Zigzagoon swiftly, and ushered Ema out of the grass and back to Littleroot Town. They told Ema that when her parents were around, they should head to the Pokemon Lab. Her father, however, was horrified when Ema told him, and rushed her back to Rustboro City without visiting the Professor.
Back home, Ema poured out the whole story to her mother. She was visibly upset, and her mom was lightening up, if not just by the slightest. A long talk the next day over breakfast resulted in her mom taking her back to Littleroot Town that next weekend.
The professor still welcomed her with open arms, of course. Her mother and the Professor had a long chat, as well as daughter and mother. Ema gained the Zigzagoon the Professor had caught, but she wasn't to travel the region. It satisfied the red head for a year, but by the time she was thirteen, Ema was itching to travel yet again. Her parents promised her that once she was fifteen, she could travel through Hoenn.
The two years went by ever so slowly. On her fifteenth birthday, Ema found herself waking up early and getting ready quickly. Zigzagoon, she realized however, would never be a battling pokemon. Though he had attacked her that fateful day, he wasn't up to doing it all the time. As soon as she left home she headed for a pokemart, got a few pokeballs, and headed to catch a new pokemon so Zigzagoon didn't have to worry about being her only pokemon and having to fight after that last battle. Luckily, she managed to catch a Shinx without too much trouble.
Ema traveled the region for four months straight, but then came back home for two. From then on, she traveled on and off, only searching to document pokemon that she found, not capture them. She wasn't interested in battling all too much either. She never challenged the gyms. Some people thought it was weird, that a young person wouldn't be into battling her Pokemon against other trainer's Pokemon. Sure, she did train them, but she wasn't interested in being called an advanced trainer or anything of the sort.
Once she turned eighteen, Ema brought all her data that she had collected to the Professor. She wanted to show them how far she had come, and what she had learned. She hasn't meant to get anything else out of it. Despite this, the Professor offered to take her under their wing as an apprentice of sorts. Ema gladly accepted. Over the years, she grew out of the apprentice title, and her job morphed into what it is today, six years later. Some people would be tired of having the same job for six years, but Ema loves it.

If there was one thing Ema hated, it was when people had no respect. So, when she was feeding a few Poochyena, the sound of the door being opened forcefully on the other side of the lab made her head jolt up and a frown fall on her face. She placed the bowl of food down but took her coffee that had rested on the table with her, a Zigzagoon at her heels. Zigzagoon never stayed in his Pokeball, which could be frustrating at work. But the two had learned to live with each other's dynamic personalities, and this was just part of living with each other.
"No one taught you how to knock?" She said, before she even looked at the person who came in. It was always the same routine: excited ten-twelve year old looking for their first Pokemon, they were just so happy they forgot their manners. That was no excuse for Ema, but nonetheless she let him choose his future partner as she took a sip of practically pure caffeine. Her Zigzagoon yipped happily at the sight of someone new, and Ema almost laughed when she finally saw what he looked like.
He was old. Old to be getting his first Pokemon, anyway. Though she was a bit of a hypocrite, considering how old she was when she got her Zigzagoon. He looked to be in his late teens, and that rarely happened here.
"Well, this is a bit awkward. For both of us." She said snarkily, looking him up and down. "Name?" As usual, Ema didn't bother to introduce herself, and left him to find her nametag on his own. He had mentioned a Pichu, so she typed a password into the machine as well as the number for the electric mouse. As the machine spun around to where the Pichu pokeballs rested, Ema placed her coffee down and picked up Zigzagoon. He tried to nip her nose, but she wasn't having it. "Be nice." She cooed. "You should know by now."
With one hand, Ema grabbed the Pokeball and offered it to him. "One Pichu." She confirmed. "You are a new trainer, right? You seem kind of... old for this." She didn't try to be subtle about it. He ought to know he would get a weird look or two by coming into the building at his age. It wasn't something that he could change, of course, but it was unavoidable and embarrassing, surely. Did he think it was embarrassing? Maybe not. Maybe he didn't care what people thought of him. He should.
Ema almost forgot that the kid was there while she got lost in her own thoughts. "Congrats, by the way. I guess."
